Photographers Capture Leadville’s Health on Camera

By Samantha Duering, Lake County High School Student

Today’s modern lifestyles have been circling around fast food and television for so long now that such a lifestyle seems normal. Thankfully, our community is now partnering with LiveWell Colorado to bring more opportunities for healthy eating and active living to Leadville and Lake County.

2013 LWLC PV GuzmanLiveWell Leadville is starting with a project called Photovoice. Through Photovoice, community photographers are proposing ways to make Leadville and Lake County a community in which it is easier to live an active, healthy lifestyle. They are helping our community find its way.

T2013 LWLC PV Romerohe LiveWell Leadville Photovoice project has attracted many people, their ages ranging from high school students to senior citizens. In March, all the volunteers were given a disposable camera to take pictures of healthy and unhealthy things in the community.  After the volunteers received their camera, they took pictures of things in our community that need improvement, in order to create more opportunities for active living and healthy eating.  They also took pictures of things that help citizens live an active, healthy lifestyle.

In April, the photographers came back with many pictures to choose from. Each photographer chose one picture that they thought would have the most impact in Leadville and Lake County. The volunteers wrote a caption on the picture they chose and then worked together to come up with the five most important areas to focus on in our community. These were: increased opportunities for physical activity; economic and community development;  a healthy and safe environment;  complete streets (streets that are designed and maintained for cars, pedestrians and bikes); and access to local, healthy food.

On July 1, there will be an Image to Action dinner at Colorado Mountain College to reveal the photographs and discuss what they mean.  The volunteers 2013 LWLC PV Lavoiewill present their pictures and thoughts on how to make Leadville a better community. Policy makers, agency directors and other citizens will be at the meeting to hear the concerns of the LiveWell Leadville Photovoice photographers.
