PRESS RELEASE – October 23, 2013
On October 22 in a special meeting, the Lake County Board of Education voted on the configuration for Preschool through 6th grade that will be put in place effective for the 2014-2015 school year. The configuration the board decided on is as follows:
- Pitts Elementary will house Preschool and the District Administration Offices
- West Park Elementary will house Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades
- Lake County Middle School will house 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades
- Lake County High School will house 7th-12th grades
The extensive input received from employees and community members was instrumental in the board’s ultimate decision not to implement the 2011 Master Plan as written and to consider alternate configurations. The board and the district expressed appreciation to all who attended one of the forums or listening tours to contribute ideas, and indicated that their decision making process benefitted tremendously from the input received.
Though the board acknowledged that there are tradeoffs inherent in any decision this complex, the configuration they chose was suggested in many different venues as one that provides room to grow at each school, fiscal efficiencies and the opportunity for the district to provide ongoing support for all grade levels. Most importantly, the board believes this configuration will fundamentally support the extensive work the school district is doing to improve student outcomes in the years to come.
In its October 22 meeting, the board did not formally decide whether any of the schools will be renamed as a part of the reconfiguration. It will take up this topic in future meetings, and if any renaming is planned, a committee will be formed to advise the board in the decision.
The district will begin transition planning immediately, and will provide employees with the opportunity to give input into staffing plans. In addition, the district has scheduled a Question & Answer session for the community about the reconfiguration for 6pm on Monday, November 4th at the district office. All are welcome and invited.
