The 2015 Summer Reading Program at Lake County Public Library has started!
Join the Summer Reading Program to earn prizes! Click here to download the Summer Reading Program flyer. This year’s theme is “Bam! Pow! Read!” relating to superheroes, supervillains and everything super.
Participants can register any Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. between the dates of June 23 and Aug. 7. Prizes may be collected any time the program is in session. You may begin reading for prizes on June 22nd. The last day to record hours will be August 8th. Anyone earning free prizes will need to record the time spent reading on a reading log, and some larger prizes require recipients to fill out a brief book sheet.
New this year are five grand prizes for top readers consisting of two bicycles with helmets and three skateboards with pads and helmets. The grand prizes will also include a free pass to the Woodward At Copper indoor sports facility. Participants can earn a chance to win one of the grand prize raffle tickets for every 35 hours of reading logged. Up to four raffle tickets can be earned per participant during the seven-week program.
This year’s free prizes were all donated by local businesses and Friends of Lake County Public Library. Other prizes include train rides for a child and an adult from Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad, microgrid beanie or toque from Melanzana, pizza from High Mountain Pies, rock treasure from the Rock Hut, mineral treasure from the Mining Museum, tacos from Manuelita’s, cinnamon sopapilla from The Grill, churros from Casa Blanca, silver dollar cookies from Cookies With Altitude, candy from Saturday’s, hamburgers or tacos from Gringo’s, gift certificates from Fire On The Mountain, ice cream from Wild Bill’s, fish food to feed the fish from the Leadville National Fish Hatchery, KOOLEE drink from Kum-n-Go, fruit from Safeway, cookies from Subway and many other prizes.
Free activities at Lake County Public Library’s AMAX Room will be offered Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between the dates of June 23 and Aug. 7. Sessions will include games, science experiments, arts and crafts and other fun activities. Weekly themes include Real Life Superheroes, The Science of Superpowers, Creating Chaos: The Stories of Supervillains, Comic Illustration 101, Hero Costume Creation and more.
Preschoolers (ages 2-5) attend the Tuesday 10 to 11:30 a.m. or Thursday, 10 to 11:30 a.m. session. Kindergarteners through first-graders (last school year) attend the Wednesday, 10 to 11:30 a.m. session. Second-graders through fifth-graders (last school year) attend the Tuesday, 1 to 3 p.m. session or the Wednesday, 1 to 3 p.m. session. Sixth grade and up can attend the Thursday, 1 to 3 p.m. session.
